Yesterday I borrowed Claire’s Canon 40D to capture some art photos on the lake, by the time Marissa and I were out there the afternoon thundershowers had moved in. This morning I got up early and decided to capture a few frames with the 40D as it has a darker infrared filter then my 10D. The results were very good producing some dreamy images of my model. Hopefully we’ll be out at the lake next week producing some exciting portraits. Look for the post here.

Well we finally got a couple of days at the beach. My high school buddy, Rande, and his wife, Cathe, were welcome hosts as we ventured down to Sarasota. They own Used Stuff in downtown Sarasota and live 15 minutes from the beach so we spent one night with them and the next at a little motel on Siesta Key. We watched the sunset, then their daughter, Sara, joined us for dinner nearby. As usual I have my infrared Canon DSLR and my color Canon DSLR close to my side often capturing images with both. I really wanted to switch lenses but didn’t dare on the salty sandy beach, so the color shots were taken with my Sigma 10-20mm F4-5.6 lens and the infrared shots were captured with the Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L lens. I did get a few nice color shots the next day at the Selby Botanical Gardens using an extension tube and the Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L lens (see my Flickr set http://www.flickr.com/wesleyray/ ). Yesterday I ordered a roll of canvas for my art printer and hope to offer prints on canvas as well as my archival art prints on watercolor paper. Stay posted for a shopping cart update soon

With a week of rain we finally get a little sunshine. I ventured out to one of my favorite spots near Gainesville, Pithlachocco Lake where the ancient Indians hung out. I capture a few Infrared photos and some really nice color shots. This old lake is really a fishing lake not a swimming lake so if you decide to check it out, bring your mosquito repellent and look for buckets of Catfish next to the local fishermen. In this particular photo you can barely see the break in the clouds as the next bout of rain rolls in. I did see a brave soul Kayaking out that channel. You can see this photo on the map if you look at my Pithlachocco Flickr set.
Well it’s a rainy day here in Gainesville and has been for many days now. I’ve been in and out but haven’t had much time to capture images. I did catch a couple but nothing to really speak of. However, I have completed a full page list of to-do items and I wrote some thoughts that came to me the other morning. I’ve decided to share them with the world.
As an artist and photographer of many years I have learned a few things about myself. As I walk this wonderful path I’m looking about for the stream of life that flows within us all. I know that it’s a common thread that can be seen by those who seek it. When opening that awareness (connecting with the intuitive right brain), a glimpse of the waves of light as they shimmer on the true reality can be seen. We really are one, connected by that continuous stream of light. Human nature however, comes with a filter (the left brain) to block this light wave so that we can do things on the earthly plane, be productive and get on with a human experience. It is possible, I believe, to see the light and function in a productive manner (Hemispheric Synchronization). My passion on this journey is to gather freeze frames of those light waves that are so very familiar to our inner child, the inner child who knows the truth, that remembers the moment we arrived on the planet merging into the human form. If I can share that view, that image, then I have arrived.
The infrared images that I capture are light waves that are not visible by our human eye and therefore offer glimpses into the unknown. In these image you see more than you might otherwise, there is a different quality and I believe this triggers our senses in ways that have not been seen in many, many years. Enjoy.

Early morning plan for the day. Do we start with the Bonaventure Cemetery or walk down to Forsyth Park around the corner? There are so many wonderful places to go while staying in Savannah. It’s a walking city and if you like architecture, iron work and gardens then you’re going to love this place. Tell them Wes Lindberg sent you, http://www.savannahbnb.com/

Well it has been a long time but I’ve been really busy helping my dear friend Samuel Ruder. He’s an artist, a watercolor artist, and at this point in time starving, well pretty close. Show fees these days are $200-$500 and most times an artist can only sell $200-$300 if they are lucky, so they are slowly sliding further into debt. I’m trying to help him make some sales on the web and have coached him into starting a blog to keep the world informed. If you get a moment pass his link around the world and see if we can stimulate an artist. Thanks.
BTW, most of the sawmill has been moved to Ft.White and I think I can get the last three pieces in one more trip, with help from my friend Jim. I’ll keep you posted.
A week from today I’ll be hanging my show at the Hipp. Wow, how time flies! The summer is almost gone and I hardly completed my list of projects. I did have an opportunity to shoot some wonderful photos that may hang in the show. It’s a long story but one of my summer adventures included buying a “Vintage Sawmill”. I know what you’re wondering, why would a photograper/professor need a sawmill? Well I didn’t really need it but it’s not everyday that one comes your way. It include a tool shed, a 1954 school bus! The bus was overgrown and so was the sawmill and that made for some fun infrared photos. I’m still in the process of moving it, selling some as scrap and placing other parts as yard art. I’m not sure what I’ll do with all the extra pieces, but I’m having fun and that’s why I did it. For those very few that might want to know, it’s a Frick 00 Sawmill, with five 52.5″circular saw blades and runs on gas or electric via belt drive. The carriage is 20 feet long and the track is 66 feet of train rails. So needless to say, lots of heavy steel. I can’t say I didn’t get any exercise this summer, I’m a real weekend warrior! Well enough of that, I need to get back to printing and framing, the show is almost here. I hope to see you at the reception, August 29, 7-10pm.
Today I spent much of the day working on my blog, these things take time. There are many custom themes, however I’d really like to create my own, which I could with more time but it might just be easier to find a theme I like and modify it. Nothing worth while is ever easy! I found a few and downloaded them, then unzipped them, then uploaded them to my server. Next I selected one and began customizing it. First off search my image database, well not the whole database as that is over 34,000 digital images. I’ve got to narrow the search, maybe just my infrared images, 5,800. Well in the end I just looked through my 4 star selects, 57 of them. I found one that might work, cropped it to fit my header and upload it to the correct folder, I think. Nice, it appears where it’s supposed to. Do I really like this theme, I don’t know but I think I need to let it ride for a while and get back to watercoloring my art images.
After 22 years traveling the country selling my artwork, I went back to school, earned a degree, was hired full time as a professor at our local community college and continued to learn more and more about video production, editing, web design, graphic design, and the list goes on and on. The important part is that I’m having great fun. This year after 8 years away from my art as a main focus, I am now back at it again with my Infrared Black and Light series. These images are created with my converted Canon 10D which only captures infrared images. In the years past I shot many rolls of infrared film, developing and printing the images on my own hand made paper using emulsions made from watercolor pigments, gum arabic and ammonium dichromate.
My boss, Jorge Ibanez, set up a one man show for me here in Gainesville at the Hippodrome Gallery for the month of August, the party will be during Artwalk Friday August 29, 2008. I hope to see you there. You can preview some of my images here on my website. Enjoy!
